The Fire Protection Accreditation Scheme (FPAS) was made mandatory in NSW on July 1, 2020, meaning that all Competent Fire Safety Practitioners must be accredited if they perform:
- Fire Systems Design (FSD) – for practitioners who endorse plans and specifications in accordance with clauses 136AA and 146B of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulation; and
- Fire Safety Assessment (FSA) – for those who endorse essential fire safety measures on annual or supplementary fire safety statements under Part 9, Divisions 5 and 7 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulation.
The legislation also introduced the new term for Competent Fire Safety Practitioner, now known as Accredited Practitioner (Fire Safety).
Chris Honey, Managing Director of Competent Fire Safety Professionals said:
“This is an important milestone for the building compliance sector in NSW, and represents a long overdue step in the professionalism of the fire safety industry.”
